In our “Tacheles Talk Israel” series, German politicians discuss all topics relevant to Israel and the Middle East region with a DIG discussion partner. At the same time, the politicians in our DIG series provide interesting insights into their personal relationship with Israel, while we try to shed light on interesting aspects by asking critical questions. The consequences of the Hamas bloodbath on October 7, 2023 and the debate about it in Germany will of course be an important topic at the event. And we also want to discuss future prospects for a “New Middle East” with our guest.

This time, Armin Laschet is our guest. Much is known about the CDU politician, his many years as a member of the European Parliament, his terms in office as a minister and prime-minister in North Rhine-Westphalia and his influence as a leading CDU politician in federal politics. What is probably less well known is his work as Chairman of the Aachen-based “Abraham Accords Institute”, whose German title “Verein zur Förderung des Abraham Prozesses für Frieden und regionale Integration” (Association for the Promotion of the Abraham Process for Peace and Regional Integration) better describes its political intentions. In this role, Armin Laschet regularly meets people from Israel and Arab states to support the peace process in the Middle East from Germany. In 2020, the peace treaties between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco were named the “Abraham Accords”, which are awaiting further expansion to include even more states. The eponym Abraham is revered as a unifying element in Judaism, Christianity and Islam as a prophet.

At our Tacheles Talk Israel, Armin Laschet will meet our board member and the director of the Mideast Freedom Forum Berlin (MFFB), Michael Spaney. Questions and contributions from the audience are welcome during the subsequent discussion.

We look forward to seeing you at the Tacheles Talk Israel.
